Contraction of apperustolare, from ad + per + Latin ustulāre. Or a variant of brustolare, from Vulgar Latin *brustulāre, from the aforementioned word, with an initial -br- which is possibly of Germanic origin (compare Lombardic *bruojan, Old High German bruoen (“to scorch, burn, singe”)).
