From Chinese Pidgin English chin-chin (an expression of gratitude, salutation or congratulations), a reduplication of Shanghainese 請 /请 (⁵chin, “please”), misinterpreted as onomatopoeic of two glasses clinking. Compare Portuguese tchim-tchim, tim-tim, Spanish chinchín, French tchin-tchin.
