From Ligurian caróggio, from Vulgar Latin *quadruvium, for Classical Latin quadrivium (“crossroads”), from quattuor (“four”) + via (“road”). Doublet of carrobbio and of learned borrowing quadrivio. Compare Corsican carrughju and Sicilian carruggiu.
