Etymology
From Old Galician-Portuguese julgar, from Old Leonese iulgar; the patrimonial Galician-Portuguese form juygar is attested, for example, in the 13th century Cantigas de Santa Maria; from Latin iūdicāre, present active infinitive of iūdicō (“pass judgement”). Compare Portuguese julgar, Asturian xulgar, Spanish juzgar.
