Attested since the 15th century. Probably from Old French virer, ultimately from Celtic, from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist”). Compare Breton gwar (“curved”), from Proto-Celtic *weiro- (“crooked”). Alternatively from Vulgar Latin *virō, probably from Latin vibrō.
