Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese morto, from Vulgar Latin *mortu(s), from Latin mortuum, perfect active participle of morior (“I die”). Corresponds to Proto-Indo-European *mr̥twós, *mr̥tós (“dead, mortal”), *mr̥tó-, ultimately from *mer- (“to die”). Cognate with Portuguese morto and Spanish muerto.
