From Old Galician-Portuguese espertar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *expertare, from *expertus, from Latin experrectus (“awoken”), perfect passive participle of expergiscor (“I awake, I wake up”). Cognate with Portuguese despertar, espertar, Spanish despertar and Catalan despertar.
