From Old Galician-Portuguese escano (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin scamnum, from Proto-Italic *skaβnom, from Proto-Indo-European *skabʰ-no-m, from *skabʰ- (“to hold up”). Cognate with Portuguese escano, Spanish escaño, Italian scanno, Sanskrit स्कम्भ (skambhá).
