From the older *enhadir (with /ŋ/), from Old Galician-Portuguese ẽader (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *innaddere, from in- (“in”) + addēre (“to add”), from Latin addēre, present active infinitive of addō. Cognate to Spanish añadir and Old Galician-Portuguese emadir.
