From Old Galician-Portuguese enganar, from Vulgar Latin or Late Latin ingannāre, present active infinitive of ingannō (“I trick, deceive”) (attested in a gloss), from Latin ganniō, gannīre. Compare Portuguese enganar and Spanish engañar.
