From Old Galician-Portuguese guiar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria) either from Old French guier, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *wītaną (“to go forth”); or directly from Gothic *𐍅𐌹𐌳𐌰𐌽 (*widan, “to join”).
