bídalo

bídalo
Meaning

birch tree (Betula)

Gender
♂️ Masculine
Pronounced as (IPA)
[ˈbiðɐlʊ]
Etymology

Probably from bídaro, from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, ultimately from Proto-Celtic *betu- (“birch”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷet- (“resin, pitch”). The tonic i can be due to the influence of Germanic forms (cf. English birch) during the early Middle Ages. Cognate with French bouleau. Compare also the Galician Celtism berro < *berŭro-, French berle < *berŭla. Synonymous with bido, bedulo, and bidueiro.
