From Old Galician-Portuguese, from Vulgar Latin *barrum (“clay, mud”), from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, possibly Celtic; compare Middle Irish broch (“waste, dregs”) and Gaulish *barros (“the bushy end”). Cognate with Portuguese barro, Asturian barru and Spanish barro.
