Attested locally since the 13th century, but uncommon before the 14th. From Old Galician-Portuguese aldea, aldeia, from Arabic اَلضَّيْعَة (aḍ-ḍayʕa, “village”). Compare Portuguese aldeia and Spanish aldea.
