Unknown. Perhaps from a hypothetical Celtic *annos + -akko-, cognate of Latin pannus (“cloth”); in that case, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂n- (“fabric”). Attested since the 15th century. Cognate with Portuguese naco, Spanish añicos.
