From Old Galician-Portuguese companneiro (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from compaña (“troop, army”) + -eiro (“-er”); from Late Latin companiō, a calque from Germanic: compare Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌱𐌰 (gahlaiba, “messmate”), Old High German galeipo, from Proto-Germanic *ga- (“together”) + *hlaibaz (“loaf, bread”).
