Etymology
From Old French escarlate (“scarlet cloth”), from Medieval Latin scarlatum (“scarlet cloth”), via Persian سقرلاط (saqerlât, “a warm woollen cloth”), a variant of سقلاط (seqellât, “scarlet cloth”) from Byzantine Greek σιγιλλᾶτος (sigillâtos), ultimately from Latin (textum) sigillātum.
