Inherited from Old French vignoble (also latinised as vinoblium). According to the most widely accepted theory from Old Occitan vinhobre, from Vulgar Latin *vineoporus, from Ancient Greek ἀμπελoφόρος (ampelophóros, “bearing vines”) by substitution of the component word ἄμπελος (ámpelos, “vine”) with native Latin vinea.
