Etymology
In summary
Inherited from Old French jalous, from Late Latin zēlōsus, from zēlus, from Ancient Greek ζῆλος (zêlos, “zeal, jealousy”). Compare Italian geloso, Spanish celoso. However, the final form in -oux is now held to come from Old Occitan gelos, rather than the expected -eux being inherited from Latin.
