Inherited from Old Spanish sarza, itself from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, possibly Old Basque çarci (modern sasi). Alternatively, from Arabic شِرْس (širs, “shrub with thorns”), from the root ش ر س (š r s) related to “harshness”, “wildness”, “ill-nature”.
