Etymology

In summary

From Old French tonel (“barrel”), diminutive of tone (“large barrel”), from Late Latin tunna, from Proto-Celtic *tunna (“hide, skin”). Probably entered through Old Galician-Portuguese or Old Aragonese, where it seems to have been borrowed earlier. Cognate with Galician and Portuguese tonel and Catalan tona.
