Inherited from Old Spanish páxaro, pássaro, from Vulgar Latin *passarum, alteration of Latin passer (“sparrow”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *p(e)t-tro- (“who flies, bird”), from *peth₂- (“to fly”). Compare Portuguese pássaro. A distant cognate of peña.
