negrito

From negro (“black”) + -ito (“diminutive suffix”). The -ito is generally thought to serve to make it more endearing and less offensive (compare Portuguese negão). For the Philippine sense, the -ito comes from the general description of the small stature of the specified people upon their first encounter.
