From Medieval Latin syringa, based on Latin syrinx, from Ancient Greek σῦριγξ (sûrinx, “pipe, tube”) (genitive singular σῦριγγος (sûringos). The initial consonant must have passed from /s/ to /ʃ/, a sporadic sound change in Old Spanish (compare jabón).
