Etymology

From Old Spanish calabaça, derived from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia *calapacceu (compare Catalan carabassa). Less likely from Arabic قَرْعَة يَابِسَة (qarʕa yābisa, “dry gourd”), which is from Classical Persian خَرْبُزَه (xarbuza, “melon”).
