Etymology

Inherited from Old Spanish Pedro, inherited from Latin Petrus, from Ancient Greek Πέτρος (Pétros), from πέτρος (pétros, “stone, rock”), related to πέτρα (pétra) (compare piedra). The lack of diphthongization is unexpected, but cf. Portuguese Pedro, with /e/ rather than /ɛ/.
