Various forms have been proposed as the original name, such as Bacatá (possibly a later invention ); Bocatá, meaning “fields’ end” and the name of a cacique; Bogote, referring to the Bogotá Savannah and used as a hereditary title; Muequetá, supposedly from Chibcha muyquy (“field”) + ta (“inside; field”).
