Meaning

A device, used to clip on a rope, that tightens when weight is applied, thus allowing the rope to be climbed.
Etymology
From the name of the Swiss firm Jümar Pangit which manufactured it, in turn from the surnames of Adolf Jüsy and Walter Marti.
