A small European and Asian passerine bird, Prunella modularis; the hedge sparrow or hedge warbler.
Etymology
From Middle English donek, dunok, equivalent to dun (“brownish grey”) + -ock (diminutive suffix). Cognate with Old High German doniklīn (“hedge-sparrow; dunnock”). Compare ruddock.
