From Middle English gote (“a drain”), from Old English *gote (“drain, gutter”), from Proto-West Germanic [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *gutō (“gutter”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewd- (“to pour”). Cognate with Dutch goot (“a gutter, drain, gully”), German Gosse (“a gutter”).
