bananas Foster

Meaning

A dessert made of sliced bananas which are sautéed in rum, brown sugar, and banana liqueur. Served with ice cream and often flambéed at the table.

Etymology

The dish was created in 1951 by Paul Blangé at Brennan's Restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana, and named for Richard Foster, a friend of Owen Brennan's who was then New Orleans Crime Commission chairman.
