Meaning

A small faint constellation of the southern winter sky, said to resemble a telescope. It lies south of the constellation of Corona Australis.

Etymology

The constellation was named by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1763, from New Latin telescopium (“a telescope”)
