Etymology

A fixed expression, originally from Bergmannssprache (“mining terminology”), literally, “in front of the end of the shaft”, or more loosely translated as “at the quarry site”; see Ort (mining) n. In folk etymology, commonly reanalyzed as being composed of Ort m (“place”).
