Etymology
From Middle High German hērlich, from Old High German hērlīh, equivalent to hehr (“sublime, noble”) + -lich, with the first element remodelled after Herr already during OHG; cf. the same development in Herrschaft and herrschen. Cognate with Dutch heerlijk (“delicious, lovely, delightful”). More at hoar, -ly.
