From Middle High German kriuzen (“to mark with a cross; crucify”), alteration (after the noun kriuze) of older krūzen, from Old High German krūzōn (“to crucify”). Equivalent to Kreuz + -en. The sense “cruise, patrol” (17th c.) is a semantic loan from Dutch kruisen, whence also English cruise.
