grummeln

Meaning

to grumble (make a low sound, as of a discontent person, an empty stomach, a distant thunderstorm)

Etymology

In summary

From Low and Central German dialects, from Middle Low German grummelen and northern Middle High German *grummeln, iterative of grummen. A relation with Gram and grimmig is theoretically possible, but the words certainly have a strong onomatopoeic element. Cognate with Dutch grommelen, English grumble.
