In summary

16th century, originally in the longer form bissolang, a univerbation of bis (“until”) + so (“so”) + lang (“long”). The word was at first chiefly restricted to vernacular High German in northern Germany. It established itself more widely in the 19th century, but remains rare in Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol.
