Etymology
From Middle Dutch tīdinge, whence is borrowed Middle High German zīdunge (West Central German), from Proto-West Germanic *tīdungō (“message”), from the verb *tīdōjan (“to happen”), from Proto-Germanic *tīdiz (“time, interval”). From this the later Upper German form zītunge, and then the modern form. Compare Dutch tijding, English tiding, Swedish tidning, Hunsrik Zeidung, Yiddish צײַטונג (tsaytung).
