Etymology

From Völker + Mord. Occasional use from at least 1759; in the Napoleonic era popularised as a calque of the French revolutionary term populicide (1792). The German was calqued into English as folk-murdering by 1892. Both the French and the German may have influenced the younger genocide (1944).
