/ˈtøːlə/
Etymology
17th century, from Low German Töle. Further origin uncertain. Plausibly from an old, though unattested, diminutive of Middle Low German tō (“bitch, female dog”), in the form of an Old Saxon *tōhila. The Middle Low German is cognate with archaic German Zohe (“bitch”), perhaps related with ziehen (“to pull, rear”).
