From Low Franconian and West Central German dialects (attested early 16th century), probably through Middle Dutch teke (compare dated modern Dutch teek), from Latin thēca, from Ancient Greek θήκη (thḗkē). The word was introduced into modern standard German in the 19th century and remains more common in western Germany than elsewhere.
