Etymology

Compound of säugen (“suckle, give suck”) + Tier (“animal”). Säuge- (from säugen (“to suckle”) is part of the compound Säugetier ("suckling animal") because female mammals nurse their young with milk, which is secreted from special glands, the mammary glands.
