Etymology

In summary

From Middle High German schuope, schuoppe, schuppe, from Old High German scuobba, scuopa, from earlier *skōbba, ultimately from the root of schaben (“to scrape”). Cognate with Middle Low German schōpe, schōve, schubbe. One of the rare words with a long vowel followed by an original geminate (compare Haken). Different simplifications of this cluster led to the great variety of forms.
