From lallen (“babble, prattle”) + Name (“name”). A technical term in onomatology, first coined in 1896 (for ancient Greek) by Paul Kretschmer, Einleitung in die Geschichte der Griechischen Sprache, p. 334. Used for German names by A. Socin, Mittelhochdeutsches Namenbuch (1903).
