Etymology

18th-century coinage displacing older ambiguous Dekade (“ten years; ten days”). From Jahr (“year”) + zehn (“ten”) with final -t probably on the model of older Jahrhundert (“century”), or possibly from zehnter (“tenth”). Compare Dutch jaartiental (“decade”).
