Etymology

In summary

Borrowed from Latin hyaena, from Ancient Greek ὕαινα (húaina). At first also hientier (15th century). According to Pliny, precious stones called hyaenia are won from hyena eyes, whence Middle High German hiennia (“kind of gem”), perhaps already Old High German hiena (“handle made of gemstone”).
