Literally, “friend Hein”. Hein was originally a euphemism for the devil (compare English Old Nick); the open compound, sometimes falsely attributed to Matthias Claudius who used it in an edition of Der Wandsbecker Bothe in 1775, can be attested as far back as 1650.
