From Middle High German vluz, from Old High German fluz, from Proto-West Germanic *fluti, from Proto-Germanic *flutiz, ultimately from the same root of fließen (“to flow”). Not cognate with Latin fluvius, which derives instead from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlewH-.
