From Middle High German eilant, einlant, from Middle Low German eilant (by which it was reinforced again during the 16th c.), from Old Frisian eiland, from Proto-West Germanic *auwjuland, from Proto-Germanic *awjōlandą. Cognate with Dutch eiland, English island, Icelandic eyland.
