Etymology

From Middle High German tuft, from Old High German duft, thuft, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewbʰ- (“to whisk, be obscured”); cognate with Danish duft (“fragrance”) and possibly Ancient Greek τῠφλός (tuphlós, “blind”). The Middle High German t- is an irregular hardening (compare tausend) that was undone in modern German.
